Media Clubs in School

HSC’s Media Clubs are school-based learning spaces where children and young people explore how media works, how messages are created, how content influences their thinking and behaviour, and how they can protect themselves in an increasingly connected world.

Implemented in primary and secondary schools, the programme uses HSC’s Smart Media Guide to help learners move beyond simply consuming media to questioning, understanding and engaging with it critically.

Through club activities, discussions, practical exercises and peer learning, learners are encouraged to examine the content they encounter, distinguish facts from misinformation, understand the consequences of their online actions and develop the confidence to make informed decisions.

The programme also creates opportunities for learners to express themselves, develop communication skills, participate in discussions and explore responsible content creation.

Why schools are important

Schools provide an important setting for building media literacy because they bring children together at different stages of development and offer opportunities for sustained learning, discussion and guidance.

HSC’s approach recognizes that children need more than access to devices or instructions on how to use them. They need to understand the content they encounter, the people they interact with, the information they share and the consequences of their digital actions.
