John Walugembe Urges Young People to Prioritize Online Safety

The Head of Small and Medium Enterprises in Uganda and a World Bank consultant, John Walugembe delivered a powerful message to young people during the second Holiday Media Program.

Organized by High Sound for Children, the program centred on equipping young minds with the skills and awareness needed to thrive in today’s digital landscape.

Addressing the young people, Walugembe emphasized the transformative potential of online platforms when used responsibly. “Online platforms are incredible tools for growth, networking, and learning—if used well,” he stated. He urged young people to focus on content that could build their careers rather than getting distracted by trends or superficial comparisons.

Drawing on real-life scenarios, Walugembe cautioned participants against being swayed by appearances, such as people flaunting wealth on social media. “Don’t let flashy lifestyles—like cars with vanity plates or doors opening as if you are in an airplane—confuse you. Stay focused. Time spent chasing these illusions could be better used building skills and securing your future,” he advised.

The session also highlighted the importance of digital literacy, with Walugembe urging the participants to adopt a mindful approach when sharing content online. He emphasized that deliberate efforts to build a positive digital footprint could have long-term benefits, particularly in career growth and personal branding.

Speaking at the same event, High Sound for Children executive Director, Patricia Osman thanked the young people who participated in the program and urged them to make good use of the information acquired.

The event concluded with the awarding of certificates of participation, recognizing the young people for their engagement and commitment to learning.
