Government has been tasked to investigate the continuous trailing of girls against boys in performance at all levels of education.
This follows the release of the 2018 Primary leaving examinations showing a sharp disparity in the performance of girls against boys.
According to the Uganda National Examinations Board, 31,758 girls failed the examinations as compared to 24,350 boys for boys.
Despite the high enrollment and more girls sitting for examinations, more boys excel in the first divisions.
High Sound for Children executive Director, Miss Hadijah Mwanje says there is need to investigate the nose diving figures and find solutions to the problem.
“As advocates of children specifically the girl child, we are pleased to see more girls sitting for the examinations, what is saddening though is the fact that at performance level the story changes, we need to exactly find out where the problem is.” She said.
She says government and civil society have done a lot of working empowering the girl child but more needs to be done to cover the loose ends.
She adds that there are so many things like missing school due to menstruation, sexual relations and limited support from parents that are deterring the girl child from performing well especially in rural areas.
