High Sound for Children (HSC) has successfully held its first-ever Online Safety Camp for young people in Eastern Uganda, marking a significant step in promoting safer digital spaces for children.

The camp brought together learners from across the region under a shared goal of building awareness and responsibility in online engagement.

Key sessions focused on understanding online safety, promoting positive digital behaviours, and addressing growing concerns such as cyberbullying and online scams. These sessions were delivered by Hadijah Mwanje- Executive Director- High Sound for Children, Prossy Kawala, Executive Director Centre for media literacy and community development and  Varsha Vaishali, Executive Director at the Cyber Harassment Support Centre respectively.

The facilitators emphasized the importance of vigilance, respectful communication, and knowing where to seek help when faced with online threats.

In partnership with Salve International, learners also explored the “cycle of life and internet usage,” drawing connections between personal growth stages and responsible digital engagement through the mobile school. The sessions highlighted the need for young people to make informed choices online, especially during the school holidays when internet use tends to increase.

The camp was designed to be interactive and engaging, with learners participating in presentations, group discussions, and creative activities such as dance. These sessions also incorporated confidence-building exercises, empowering young people to express themselves, speak up against online abuse, and become ambassadors of positive digital use in their communities.

HSC ED, Hadijah Mwanje noted that the camp comes at a critical time as children break off for holidays, a period often marked by increased exposure to online platforms.
